Having a lobster for lunch in a fine dining restaurant could spell disaster on your pocket. After all, lobsters cost a lot. (...)

Having a lobster for lunch in a fine dining restaurant could spell disaster on your pocket. After all, lobsters cost a lot. In fact, it is considered as the most expensive Crustacean delicacy on our lunch or dinner table.

What makes lobsters too expensive? Is it because of the big servings as lobsters are known to be weighing five kilos at an average? Well, perhaps. A typical layman would probably think that the price of lobsters is too stiff because catching one is difficult too — considering the pain it may inflict on us the moment its sharp claws gets too much closer to our hands for comfort.

Lobsters, considered as valued food stuff at that, are of course sumptuous when served on our buffet table, which is probably one of the reasons why it has gone way far from being an affordable food delicacy and too expensive for a typical worker to have as lunch.

But what if we get to serve ourselves with a lobster that we ourselves caught? Wouldn?t it be cheaper? But of course it would, but how do we catch lobsters, if ever we are eager to haul one from the surface of the water.

Catching a lobster isn?t really as difficult as many would imagine it to be. In fact, catching lobsters may somehow be similar to catching crabs. Lobster fishery folks in the tropical regions around the globe have the luxury of catching lobsters with the use of simple gears similar but much bigger than the crab pot and crab traps.

On top of these fishing gears made of welded wires shaped in box form, there are also recent inventions like the stunner, which instantly makes the lobster unconscious (or shall we say dead) the moment it is used on the valued Crustaceans. By the way, stunners or crusta-stun, an invention of an American lawyer from the University of Bristol, cost something like $ 2,000, which makes the process of lobster preying far more expensive than buying one for your lunch.

There are also tips and techniques as to how to catch a lobster using the bare hands (although many people into lobster fishing would hardly recommended such methodology as lobsters have very sharp shell claws which may inflict pain and wound to those who may dare catch them using their very hand).

Of the long list of way to catch lobsters, the most common among small-time lobster fishing people in tropical countries is the use boxed gear made of welded wire as their tool in catching lobsters. These devices, it was learned are far cheaper (as compared to the crusta-stun) and the most commonly used in the booming industry of lobster fishery.

Baits, which are normally fish parts or chicken necks, are tied at the bottom of the boxed gear, with collapsible sides which fall flat on the floor when submerged under the water. Then the gear is dropped in a marked portion of the waters or tied with a buoy so that lobster catchers can easily locate them when they get back for it. The moment a lobster closes in and gets into the center of the gear, the cord, which is tied at the top of the four collapsible sides of the device, is pulled up allowing the sides to form and re-assemble into a box, trapping the lobster inside. Then the gear is brought up from the deep.

What?s next? Take your box (of course, with the lobster in it) in your kitchen and do the next best thing on it — cook or fry, it's your call.

Introduction to Blue Crabs

Introduction to Blue Crabs

Blue crabs excellent oceanic swimmers belonging to the crustacean class. While describing, blue crabs in Greek entails beautiful swimmer whereas in Latin it implicates tasty. Blue crabs are quite commonly found in the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Blue crab fishing is generally found in wide range in the region of Chesapeake Bay and this form of fishing is considered to be the most exciting form of recreation. As per the report, the harvest of blue crab in Chesapeake Bay has hit an approximate count of around 60 million pounds, which is someway under the continuing average.

Though people practice various forms of fishing, fishing for crabs is a very unique art. Blue crabs hold the diverged dieting practice and they usually feed on the waste of the dead animals. Blue crab fishery is the most substantive practice of fishery and it has an average industrial catch of 50,000 bushels of tough shells and strippers every year.

Among the blue crabs, olive green and white blue crab is the far-renowned variety and they are dearly known for its splendid blue claws. This variety of blue crab is dominant benthic. Generally, blue crabs attain their maturity in early stages and bear the eggs for very short duration. Environmental debasement in the Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico endanger Blue Crabs in this realm.

Harvesting and Cooking Blue Crabs

Basically, blue crabs are usually eaten-up with the hard shell, once after they are well steamed in big pots with water and vinegar. When blue crabs are prepared by a chef, they are chapped out by hands. The meat is taken out and eaten up instantly. The meat which is especially obtained in large chunks from the backfin region will be used to prepare crab cakes, soups and several other mouth watering dishes.

Blue Crabs that are picked fairly next to molting are used in the preparation of soft shell crabs. Usually the soft shell crabs are made, by initially chopping off the gills, face, and guts of the crab. Further the crab is basted along with egg, flour and flavoring materials. Once after a complete mix-up they are deep-fried in oil to give a crispy taste. Blue crabs give an average rate of 15% edible meat, and the obtained meat is totally rich in vitamin B12. Taking three ounces of crab meat will supply the complete vitamin for a whole day.

Instantly after shedding, the blue crabs are endangered to predators, as the shells of the blue crabs are merely very soft. For this reason, they could be frequently concealed in Bay grass beds for protective covering. The infant and little blue crabs make use of the Bay grass beds for caring protectiveness, and blue crabs of several other sizes pasturage for food there.

Similarly equivalent to several different aquatic animals, blue crabs are also easily endangered to summertime?s squat oxygen conditions. Also, blue crabs easily die due to low level of oxygen when they are entrapped in crab pots at a low oxygenic circumstances.

Just like fishing, catching crabs using simple gears is rapidly gaining popularity. (...)

Just like fishing, catching crabs using simple gears is rapidly gaining popularity. In fact, it has gone from popular to phenomenal with most of the families living in tropical regions now into what appears to be the hottest craze during weekends.

Simple Crab Traps

But unlike fishing crab catching is a far cheaper hobby. As compared to the fishing gears, a hobbyist could have his own crab trapping device for as little as two dollars.

With so much less, crab-catching enthusiasts can make what is commonly known as crab traps. A crab trap, which is usually smaller and lighter in weight than a crab pot, is a boxed-type device made out of welded wires with collapsible sides, with each of its side tied with a cord. The sidings of the crab trap lies flat on the floor the moment it is dropped to a portion of a water surface. At the center of the crab trap is bait, which is normally a chicken neck, tied at the base of the gear.

While crabs are known to be omnivores, they tend to eat more meat than plants. There are many other possible bait forms such as fish parts and bull lips, but it would be advisable to make use of the chicken necks as bait because chicken bones could hold on to the welded wire-made device, making crabs to stay longer and allows a crab trap hobbyist more time to lure in another prey into the ?boxed trap?.

The moment a crab gets to the center of the crab trap (underneath the water), the cord, which is attached to the top portion of each of the four sides, is pulled to allow the sides to rise and re-assemble itself into a box. Then the crab trap is pulled out from the surface of the water. Then what do we have — the poor crab is ready to meet his end and serve as among the sumptuous food for the family?s picnic surprises.

Crab traps are being used by hobbyists and families on a weekend day out in a park where freshwater crabs are bred and made available as recreational activity, or near freshwater bodies of water, such as rivers and lakes.

Crabbing Regulations

But while crab catching may have been rapidly getting everyone into it, there are Federal laws governing the hobby. Under such law are implementing rules and guidelines as to where these activities could be done. Crab trapping, which is of course far from being a revenue earner as the gear offers minimal haul, gets more leniency than that of crab potting, which allows bigger hauls. Crab potting has likewise been limited to privately-owned waterfront properties. Commercial crab catching has stricter guidelines — and stiffer penalties too, as provided in federal laws governing commercial crab fisheries.

Now, how would you like fresh crab catch for the picnic dish? Crabs are definitely sumptuous, but it would be taste even better if we get to eat crabs that we ourselves hauled into from the water.

A minus-tide plus a beautiful sun equals one perfect day to go clamming, provided you have the clamming equipments to capitalize. Make sure to hit the waves an hour prior to the lowering of tides. Then seek for the illusive tiny holes in the course grains of the sun. These holes must be at least half of an inch in diameter. The first to thing to check is if a living creature is present in side this holes. Stick a finger to it and if you feel movement right through it, then ? bingo ? you got your prospective catch for the day! Immediately, dig a larger hole and with full adrenalin, run after it before he snaps away from you. Note that these hard-shelled buddies are expert in burrowing into the sand.

If you?ve got all these in mind, then it?s time to gear up for the real thing. To start with, take a couple or more ?? dowel for this activity. These dowels are very useful clamming equipments; as you may use them to mark down the spots where you have spotted your prey. When you have stake all dowels, then you may set your parameters. Pour down a potion of your energy in digging right on the side of the ocean and hit the shovel beneath the portion where the edge of the dowel touches the surface of the shell. This is found to be one of the most thriving and efficient manner of digging for their hideouts. Place each and every dowel you have and dig them individual. Be careful and cautious when digging. You don?t want to bring home tiny pieces of shell, do you?

When a beginner tags along with your journey, you may want to let him use one of your good-ol-clam guns. These clamming equipments are clever tools and are just perfect for the newbie. While those who have been running after the clams for a long time already, handy clam shovel can just be their best friend. Note that the tubing of a clam gun measures about 3' long x 4" in diameter. And are made entirely by either metallic or plastic raw materials. It is fully-open at an end and is closed at the other rear end. You may notice a tiny hole at the closed end. This allows the user to carry it by simple conveniently. By simply pushing carefully towards the sand and placing the thumb to cover the tiny hole, the gun then starts to suck sand. If you see a tube full of course sand, then you can be sure that the trick is perfectly maneuvered. It may be an indigenous material, but the results are astonishing.

Well, one thing you should know about clam guns, is that they do not really function well in location where huge gravel or rock are present. However, a much more expensive gun may be available at your favorite crabbing equipment, clamming supplies, and bait and tackle shops. Guns made of solid metal may cause you a whopping $60-$75 while reliable shovels may cost $6 each. Not bad for a worthy activity, right?

At the end of the day, digging and sweating out on your own is simply fun and way way cheaper than having to drive downtown to buy a posh gadget.

What is Clamming

Clam digging or clamming is one of the usual ways of ?harvesting? clams on the surface of tidal mud flats where they usually thrive. It can be both for commercial or recreational purposes. Colloquially, commercial clam digging is often referred to as clamming that is done by a person called a clammer.
For those who want to try clamming just for recreational purposes, a spading shovel or a long-handled spading fork can be simply used.

In the area of Nova Scotia, somewhere in the Minas Basin, people who are into clamming often use a clam hack and a spading fork in digging the soft-shelled clams. The digger would usually use the hack by grasping the prong?s spine in one hand. The handle, meanwhile, would push the hack down into the mud and pull it up towards him or her. This would dig the mud exposing the clams to be ?caught?.

Recreational Clamming

Recreational clamming can truly be a fun family sport. The family?s elders and youngsters can enjoy doing this activity. You just have to bring your clam shovel and a container where you will put the clams you will collect. But be sure that you are familiar with the latest regulations governing clam digging.
When it is fall or winter especially when low tides happen at night, you can see thousands of clam diggers doing their tasks. It is simply because it is the most recommended time of the year to dig the clams.

So do you know how to dig clams?

The first step is to look for a clam show which refers to the particular place where the clams have withdrawn their necks or have started to dig making them leave a dimple or a hole on the mud or sand. Listed below are just some of the ?clam shows? that you have to look for:

1.	Keyhole: this is usually characterized by a shape like an hour glass or a key hole with distinct sides.

2.	Dimple: A simple depression on the mud or sand.

3.	Doughnut: It is characterized by some raised sides.

You should look for larger holes around as this happens to be a good indicator of the location of the clams. You can get as much clams ay permitted under some policies which has been imposed by some governmental entities. The digging of clams if of course somewhat moderated.

Clamming is really a great task to spend your time on. Most of the people who do this for recreational reasons will eat the clams that they find since clams are considered a very sumptuous seafood commodity. You might also be interested in doing this as a past time or hobby. This is a very productive recreation since you can have something to eat afterwards. So, why not start inviting your friends and family to start digging some clams on the mud?

A Trip to Chesapeake Bay

Generally, individuals take a long ride with the boats and travel quite some miles where they find the crabbing productivity as good enough. The trawl line is further directed into the seawater at an intensity of about 3 ? 20 feet along with a line existing around some 1200 to 2000 feet in length.

Crabbing in Chesapeake Bay

The new-fangled rules and guidelines on commercial and entertaining crabbers are intended and planned to contract the crab production to a level of around 15 percent by the succeeding 3 years. Quite a large group of boaters have raised disputes and contravene that the production will tend to guilt, and they also inscribed that they face great difficulties with much intricate problems. Moreover, unclean water with low quality and maintenance is one of the major reasons that destroyed the sea grasses. This sea grasses dole out as an instinctive hiding place for quite several little crabs, causing them greatly endangered to rapacious fish.

A fishery scientist by the name Bill Goldsborough at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation affirms the control on crab returns. Chesapeake Bay is an excellent place to find good and huge number of blue crabs. Crabbing is an excellent and funniest form of carry out which is being practiced by most number of people. They can spend good hours of enjoyment and pastime! The blue crab has extensively been a linchpin for the boatmen, who formulate their sustenance from the Chesapeake Bay. Officials have given a warning sign that there is a huge drop-down in the population rate of the crabs. If this situation resides, it will no way profit anyone. Moreover, the production rate of the female crab has been totally drop-down to around by 80% over the past twelve years. To give a complete protection and security to Chesapeake Bay crabbing, officials have enforced new rules which confines and bounds the boaters working time to 8 hours.

Crabs are perhaps one of the most expensive seafood on our dinner table. In fact, crabs fall under the likes of lobster insofar as costs are concerned.
Crabs, sea specie falling under the category of Crustaceans, are considered sumptuous, in whatever and however it is prepared on the buffet table.

But while many would be feasting on it, most would be wondering how easy or difficult it is to catch these Crustaceans, which are considered rare catch on shallow bodies of water. These crustaceans are so scarce that studies claim that the population of the crabs is pegged at a low 20 percent of the entire marine Crustaceans (excluding plants and corals), caught or farmed worldwide.

The conventional net, which is being used by typical fishermen, would not be strong enough to keep them long until the entire ?fisherman?s blanket? is pulled out of the waters.

In lieu of nets, fishermen use what is commonly called as ?crab pots?.
Crab pots are fishing gears designed to trap — what else, but crabs. But what is a crab pot? Crab pot is a fishing gear shaped like a box, made of welded wires and designed with four trap doors just big enough for crabs to walk into. The trap doors allow crabs to enter as it pushes its way in, closer to the bait. It however, does not open outwards.

The size of crab pots vary. For small crab catchers or those hobbyists or people which take the craft of catching crabs as a sport of sorts, the device could be something like two feet on all sides and a similar two feet for the base and altitude. It is made of welded wires, strong enough against the crabs. It has four openings — all made into trap doors, on each side of the device. It weighs around 15 pounds.

For commercial crab catchers, it could be bigger and heavier as the device is designed to accommodate as many crabs as they could. These devices are usually brought up to the surface twice a day. crab pots are dropped in marked part of the ocean (as for commercial crab catchers) or deep portions of a freshwater basin or river (for crab catching sports hobbyists).

Inside these crab pots are baits, which could either be fish parts, chicken necks, eel or bull lips, as what Maryland crab catchers do, although crabs are known to be omnivores or species that eat both meat and plant.

Just like fishing, crab catching could as well be considered a rapidly gaining popularity as the hobby has grown ?phenomenal? to an extent that commercial crab haulers would somehow feel what appears to be minimal effect on their industry.
In fact, tropical regions around the world have started gathering and mobilizing groups of hobbyists engaged in what could as well be considered as the ?fine art of catching crabs — with really trying to?.
