Clam digging or clamming is one of the usual ways of ?harvesting? clams on the surface of tidal mud flats where they usually thrive. It can be both for commercial or recreational purposes. Colloquially, commercial clam digging is often referred to as clamming that is done by a person called a clammer.
For those who want to try clamming just for recreational purposes, a spading shovel or a long-handled spading fork can be simply used.

In the area of Nova Scotia, somewhere in the Minas Basin, people who are into clamming often use a clam hack and a spading fork in digging the soft-shelled clams. The digger would usually use the hack by grasping the prong?s spine in one hand. The handle, meanwhile, would push the hack down into the mud and pull it up towards him or her. This would dig the mud exposing the clams to be ?caught?.
